"It's just the Constitution."

"It's just the Constitution. It's not that big of a deal. Who cares? Lincoln did worse."

These are the words my sister-in-law used to defend Bush's illegal domestic spying program.

"It's just the Constitution."

I don't know how much more I could say about this that she hasn't already done herself. I said to her, whether it's "just the Constitution" or not, it's still against the law. She didn't care. The conversation spiraled further out of control when she started calling George Bush a "Uniter" and that if Hillary were to get elected she'd be the biggest divider ever. Not that I care about Hillary, but if you're so blind that you can see George Bush doing anything but dividing you are Crazy, with a capital "C."

Man, ignorant people get my goat.

I sympathize...I have a doppy brother-in-law. I know your frustration.

If I was talking to my b-in-law I would plant some seeds of doubt.

I've noticed over the last few months that the zealots are maintaing a brave face but do not have the fight in them that they had in 2004. They see everyday that the administration are bums...they KNOW it deep down.

I'd ask here if she was comfortable with...say a Democrat President spying on her?

As you know it's undoubtly illegal. Also, there was nothing stopping Bush from using the process to spy on the people he claims he was spying on.

Why would he not use the process? My guess and the guess of many others is that he was spying on political opponents.

So is she okay with the President spying on whoever he wants without answering to anyone?

Hope it helps.

I pretty much called her out on shit like that and it didn't matter. She's buying the whole "time of war" and "I don't have anything to hide so I don't care" defenses.

My favorite was "It's just the Constitution" though

I've fallen back on the..."You are going have a lot of egg to wipe off of your face in the next couple years...if you want to blindly defend Bush on all points it's only going to get worse and worse for you."

Locally there are alot of property tax issues due to the Bush cuts in funding to our state that went hand-in-hand with his tax-cuts.

The b-inlaw finally half-heartedly admitted that I'd told him so two years ago that state and local taxes were going to have to go up.

Just cause Bush stops funding things doesn't mean that we still don't NEED some of those things, and still need to pay for them.

It's frustrating I know...but I think the zealots they are crumbling from the inside.
