I think saying "these are the best 10 films ever" is ridiculous. But, I'll play along:
1) 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick
2) Blue Velvet, David Lynch
3) The Godfather Part II, Francis Ford Coppola
4) Roger and Me, Michael Moore
5) Paradise Lost, Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger
6) American Movie, Chris Smith
7) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Peter Jackson
8) Dr. Strangelove, Stanley Kubrick
9) Capturing the Friedmans, Andrew Jarecki
10)Full Metal Jacket, Stanley Kubrick

The Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick collaboration of 2001 A Space Odyssey is amazing considering the era it was made. No CGI at all.
It's not a "best films ever" list. It's a "these are my favorite 10 if i had to narrow it down" list.
and I'm surprised you went for return of the king instead of fellowship.
I saw 2001 in the movie theater as a child and I havn't been right since. :)
Seriously though, I was around 5 or 6 and it really freaked me out.
It occurs to me that the movie I most often recommend to people is "Dazed and Confused".
Understand that I'm not talking about making a reccomendation to film buffs but other forty-somthings that might get a kick out of looking back at their highschool era.
Just thought I'd mention that since I didn't put it in my previous post.
