UVSC still too liberal

Apparently, there's another stir at UVSC, this time it's about teaching a proposed global/intercultural understanding course. Affluent community members and donors decided that this class could be too liberal, they decided to send it back to the drawing board.

I read about this over at Joe Vogel's blog where he wrote an editorial about the situation, posted it to his blog and sent it to all of the newspapers.

What kind of a world are we living in where it's okay for the wealthy and narrow minded to decide how college students are educated in public institutions? The answer baffles me.

The anti-intellectualism movement on the right is just one more creepy thing to come out of "conservatism". It's too bad that UVSC is so beholden to such donors. It might be a good idea to do some outreach and create relationships to other possible donors that want to promote learning and understanding. I think it's important for UVSC to do what needs to be done to gain independence from this kind of political manipulation.

I agree. Something needs to be done about this. Protest? what?

If it was me, I'd keep doing things at UVSC (as a student or professor) that continues to piss donors and community members off.

If I were students, I'd organize a Global/Multi-Cultural class ANYWAY!!!!! Hold it ON CAMPUS. Teach it YOURSELVES!!!! Get arrested or kicked off campus by security!!!

Send out a press release to EVERY newspaper saying "Our college refused to teach us about Global Issues, so we're forced to teach it to ourselves".

Make sure to include a copy to the National Accreditation Board.

That would make the college look bad, you'd get free press, and you'd at least attempt to get UVSC on the Accrediation Shit List.

On a second read, my suggestion seems a little rash. I suggest no one actually do this.

No one will pay attention to you. Or will they....?

I actually don't think that's a terrible idea....

If I were a student, I'd certainly consider it.
