THE ACADEMY AWHORES

Seriously, out of all 5 "Best Picture" nominees, "CRASH" was on the bottom of my list. I mean, c'mon! Did you guys see "Munich"? Even that was a better picture. That's not to say that "CRASH" sucked, but it wasn't a holyfuckingshitthat'sthebestmovieoftheyear type movie. I had a 75% success rate with my predictions, but I'd just assume throw them all out. "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN" should have won, it didn't. And I second Bryan's quotation of Jon Stewart: "Martin Scorcese: 0 Oscars. 36Mafia: 1 Oscar." What a messed up little system they have going on there.

I say: Have the Academy Awards be like The Olympics... every 4 years. That way, you could filter out films like "A Beautiful Mind" and "Shakespeare In Love" (does anyone even watch those movies anymore?) And I don't think "CRASH" would have lasted the test of time. I think "Brokeback Mountain" would have.

Sorry Steve, I can't back up your dissing of Shakespeare in Love. That movie is easy in my top 25... Titanic would have been a better example...

...rassa-frassin....three-six mafia...

I've had the same thought myself....

I was bummed that Brokeback didn't win and agree that it should have.

I disagree about Saving Private Ryan, though. I loved "Shakespeare In Love" and thought either it or "Life Is Beautiful" deserved the Oscar that year.

Agreed, "Life is Beautiful" should have beat out most of those films. I'm personally luke warm about "Shakespeare in Love". But, what about "Eyes Wide Shut" or "Magnolia"? Two great films from that year that weren't even nominated. Seriously, "Eyes Wide Shut" was the best film that year (1999).

Shakespeare in Love was 98. Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia were 99.

This here is Duckie weighing in the issue.

I have boycotted the Academy Awards for years. The last time I tuned in was in 1998. It was the year that Elliott Smith performed a little number on his guit-fiddle. He seemed way out of place amongst all of the Hollywood glitz.

For me it all boils down to this: Winning or losing doesn't make a film any better or worse. Who cares?

BTW I boycott the Olympics too. Who cares?

Hey Jenni,

Did you realize that you said that you were "bummed" that Brokeback Mountain didn't win?

Interesting choice of words don't ya think?

Until next time,

Oh, yeah. 1998, but the awards were held in 1999. Whatever. It's still Eyes Wide Shut, man.

Kubrick, Scorcese, Lynch, Hitchcock, never won an Oscar for directing. That's bullshit.

Jack Tripper said...

You are absolutely right Steven, 1999 it was. But I think you mispoke when you said "bullshit", I feel "Bull crud" would be more apropriate in this case.

Speaking of Kubrick, have you seen Dr. Strangelove in recent years? It has a lot of relivence today more than ever so it seems. Peter Sellers is grand!

By the way, I will be watching Apocalypse Now this evening. And tomorrow I have off so I will becoming reaquainted with The 400 Blows and will try to fit in a little "This Divided State". I have it sitting right here in front of me. I would watch it tonight but I am in the mood to watch things blow up! I'll let you know what I think after viewing it tomorrow.

I hope you still aren't sore at me.

(Hopefully) your pal,

Duckie Butters

Only time can tell how time will treat these movies, but I'm inclined to believe that a month from now, no one will care.

BTW, for anyone who cares, today is the anniversary of Kubrick's death.

Strangelove is one of those highly quotable movies. I don't know how many times I talk about people seeing "The Big Board."

Steve, in your post you say:

"I had a 75% success rate with my predictions, but I'd just assume throw them all out."

I believe what you meant to say was ".....but I'd just AS SOON throw them all out."

Is English your naitive tongue or are you from France or something?

Mr. Censored Tongue

PS

Do you like my new handle?

Yes Bryan, That bit about being scared that the Ruskie will see the big board is hilarious!

My favorite bit of dialogue is when Jack D. Ripper is talking about water flouridation. That scene rules!

I checked out your other blog and saw that you have a screenplay on it. Very cool. I haven't read it yet but I will.

Thanks for talking to Steve about not cussing at me. He'll listen when it's coming from you so it seems.

Thanks, that meant a lot.

Duckie Butters

What the fuck are you talking about Duckie? Cussing?

... said...

Dawn, I was being sarcastic. Duckie said, "don't cuss", so I said, "What the fuck are you talking about"? Get it?

If you don't like it, then please visit another blog. You have a choice to visit here, and I am flattered at your constant attention. But don't tell me how to act or how to speak. That's just silly.

Cheers, Duckie. No harm done.

Dawn, thanks for visiting the blog!

Steven,

who in the hell are you talking to? I don't see any "Dawn" around here.

Are you feeling alright?

I think you better go lie down.

your pal,

Duckie

PS

This sort of thing happens used to happen to me all the time. Thank goodness for my meds!
